Quiz #3 is now available on BlackBoard. It will close at 11PM tonight. Please take some time today to take the quiz. If missed quiz #2, I’m re-opened quiz #2 as well. I understand that several people did not receive notices from Blackboard that the quiz was open.
As briefed in labs this week, quiz day has moved to Wednesday. This way I can remind you all that there’s a quiz when you attend lab.
It’s coming up on a year since I’ve gone to Disneyworld and I was getting a little sad that it’s been so long and that a co-worker of mine is going to a conference at the Swan soon. My thoughts turned to My Pal Mickey. I got one last year and absolutely loved it. I hooked him to my camelback and he went everywhere with me. I was wondering if I could find some resources for hacking him, so I could use him to start asking the kids if they missed the Magic Kingdom and start working the pysop on the Mrs to get another trip in the planning stages. I found out that My Pal Mickey has been discontinued. Oh how sad, it was an amazing piece of technology.
The second part of episode 5. Users, Processors and Filesystem structures. Another set of note are in the forums for students, rather than embedded slides.

I’ve broken episode 5 into two parts to make it easier to download and listen to. In part one I cover the rest of chapter 2’s file discussion. I posted some notes in the forums rather than producing slides. It will help to have the book handy to, I reference the picture on page 50 in order to help explain links.

Episode 4 is another lecture I cut short to keep under the 30 minute time frame. I finished up the chat about coupling and cohesion. I talked about system calls and statically versus dynamically linked programs. I started into the philosophy of UNIX, but I’ll have to finish that up tomorrow.

In episode three we talk about kernels and do a little more history. I also talk about how I’d like to run the participation part of everyone’s grade.
Over the summer I took the six day SANS 525 Project Management and Effective Communications for Security Professionals and this autumn I passed the very challenging certification exam. That made me a GIAC certified project manager, versed in the art and science of managing projects in accordance with the PMBOK. Today I got the hardware to hang on the wall.

I continue to wander around counting bars on my iPhone. Northfield has amazing coverage. I get full bars in places were my Verizon phone was completely dead zoned. I had edge coverage downtown and read and sent emails from the Subway over lunch. I’m hopeful that there will be 3G coverage soon. Edge was fine for Twitter and a one or two sentence email but I wouldn’t want to download music or pictures with it.

There are no slides for episode 2, please use chapter 1 of the book and follow along. This episode talks about the duties of a system administrator. I also introduce the idea that many decisions a system admin makes will not be based on technology (or achieving the best technical solution.) Many decisions will be based on business needs and my run counter to the best possible technical outcome.
At the end of the day, system admin is about helping people get the most out of technology in order to achieve your organization’s goals.
