Spore getting mixed reviews and carries crappy DRM

I was intrigued by Spore. I’m generally a sucker for strategy/action games (I’ve purchased nearly every game Sid Meiers has sold) I get disappointed fast with games that don’t live up to the hype. I bought Age of Sail II on the pre-release reviews and it was wretched. All the hype around Spore made me a little nervous, but the Sims rocked and if these were the same people, then maybe it would be okay.

The one thing I hate about the Sims is that I have to have the CD to play. When the CD gets scratched I’m boned. I like to play games on my macbook and it’s a huge pain in the ass to cart a CD case around with game install discs just so the game will play. I was hoping they would fix that with Spore, and they tried, sorta, I guess… You can install the game three times and activate it over the Internet when you want to play. What happens when you cannot connect to the net? Does your copy stop? I want Spore to play when I can’t see the net (else I’d be playing WoW)

Here’s some of the on-going coverage of the Spore mis-launch.

    Lab downloads

Over the course of the semester we’ll be using Gnu privacy guard and Knoppix 5.1 linux. I have an iso image of Knoppix and will burn cd’s for people in lab, provided you bring a blank cd. If you are comfortable burning your own copy or already have a Linux computer then you are all set. You may use your own machine for labs.

Gpg is available on line for all major operating systems. You should download a version that is compatible with the machine you use for email. E.G. If you read email on a windows pc, get a windows version of gpg. I tend to sign official emails using gpg. You should be suspicious of unsigned emails from my email address.

    CIS2151, Reading and homework

The next reading assignment is chapter 2, pages 39-68. Focus on the OSI networking model, you will see the seven layers in quizzes and tests. Earmark page 57, we’ll be working with IP and TCP headers a lot in later weeks. For homework, answer review questions 2.1 thru 2.3. There will be a quiz available on Monday covering the material in chapter 1.

Next week’s lab is a departure from the book a little, you’ll want to skim through the web site http://www.gnupg.org/gph/en/manual.html to learn about Gnu Privacy Guard and public key/private key encryption. I like to sign all official emails to students, so it’s important to get a good working knowledge of gpg.

Elect the Liopleurodon, it will show us the way.

I finally found a political bumper sticker I can put on my car, it’s this one.  I support the Liopleurodon and its platform of guiding people to Candy Mountain.

    CIS2151, week two

The assignment is to read chapter 1 and answer review questions 1.1, 1.2, and 1.8 on page 37. You can email your answers to me. This week we will be working on a lab to experience the size of the Internet using traceroute. I’d like to post assignments and links and things here versus having to make two identical posts on Blackboard, please vote in the poll to voice how you feel about that, I’m hoping that most students won’t care about which site they need to visit in order to get the course materials, but I could be wrong.

    This week, one lab

Week one has begun and I was surprised to be in the lab until 9. The new folks showed up, got the hand out, and hit the road. It was some folks from last year that swung by for a visit. It’s great to catch up with previous students.

    Getting ready for school

The semester starts tomorrow. I’ll be spending today getting blackboard ready and preparing for my first lab. Now I just have to make sure I’ve got appropriate civilian attire cleaned and ready to go.

Wrath of the Lich King cinematic… Wow

The new WoW WotLK Cinematic is out and it’s stunning. I hope the game is just as cool. I like the machinima trailer that first came out . I know some people were disappointed with a lack of a full cinematic, but now those people should be happy. The frost wyrm is very cool and I’m very glad I took the time to go back and play Warcraft 3. I’ll have to get and play through the Frozen Throne as well. But I probably won’t get all that done before WotLK comes out.

Using WordPress to keep an iPod Touch in sync

After some testing I have been able to write posts for my blog on my iPod, on the web, and in MacJournal. Anything that’s on the web site will sync down to the iPod, but MacJournal doesn’t seem to receive changes from the blog after downloading the initial blog post.

I’ll post on the macjournal forums to see if that’s normal or if it’s a bug. I’ve tried to download edited posts using macjournal 5.0.4 and 5.1.
